Star Battle online: free daily puzzle

By Andrew Boyko · Updated Nov 2026

Put one star in every row, column and coloured region. Stars may never touch, not even diagonally. Tap a cell to cycle blank → ✕ → ★.

Size

The puzzle of the day is the same for everyone and changes at midnight on your device. All puzzles come from the Pencilmark library and are solver-certified.

Rules

  1. Every row has exactly one star.
  2. Every column has exactly one star.
  3. Every coloured region has exactly one star.
  4. No two stars are adjacent horizontally, vertically or diagonally.

Classic Star Battle puzzles on bigger grids use two stars per row, column and region. Pencilmark's puzzles use the one-star version.

Where to start

Look for small regions first: a region of two cells already limits two rows or columns. Then use the techniques in the how-to-solve guide: last candidate, confined regions, neighbor squeeze and region groups.

FAQ

What are the rules of Star Battle?

Place stars so every row, every column and every coloured region contains exactly one star (in the 1-star version), and no two stars touch, even diagonally.

Is this the same as Queens?

The 1-star Star Battle rules are essentially the same as the rules of Queens-style puzzles. See the comparison page for details.

Does every puzzle have a single solution?

Yes. Each puzzle is verified to have exactly one solution, and the solver confirms it can be reached by logic without guessing.

Where can I learn the techniques?

The how-to-solve guide explains the four techniques the solver uses, each with a real example board.
